Moonstone

Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar group mineral orthoclase. During formation, orthoclase and albite separate into alternating layers. When the light falls between those two layers it scatters, producing a phenomenon called Adularescence. That’s what makes it look all shiny. That diffraction energy is like a screen on a window. It keeps a lot of bugs out. Moonstone is a highly protective stone.

The degree of that protection varies depending on the color of the moonstone.

For instance, grey or black moonstone, which carries a good grounding energy, is thought to be one of the most protective of the moonstones. Not surprising considering its mystical legends.

The ancients, including the Romans, believed it was born from solidified rays of the moon. It has long been attributed with Devine feminine and Moon Deities. Pretty powerful ally, right?

I recommend black moonstone for children, specifically Highly Sensitive Children who suffer from nightmares or are often awoken by “visitors”.

The most common moonstone (which has, by the way, the alternative name Hecatite after the Goddess Hecate) is generally light white to tan in color. This is a general nurturing stone and is excellent for many yin issues. The more peach colored moonstone is great for problems during pregnancy and childbirth.

The more mystical sister, Rainbow Moonstone, is popular among jewelry artists’ world-wide.

As a healer, Rainbow Moonstone is top notch. It can aid in conception and assist with fertility issues. I pair it with Menalite or Grey Fairy Stones in these cases. Rainbow Moonstone is also thought to ward of ill will as well as physical ailments. The blue ray strengthens intuitive centers and brings on dreams. One should be warned, however, first dreams with this little lady are more than likely always energy clearing dreams.

Out of Madagascar, Earth Tone Moonstone is a grand nurturer, soothing frayed nerves and even long held fears. Pair it with any of her sisters, or with fellow “Feldsarian” labradorite for a little magic kick. Try it with Amazonite (another Feldspar) for support in speaking, especially when there is something hard to say.

Nurturer, protector, Divine Sister? Yes, Moonstone plays all of those roles and many more. Discover their magic on full moons. Or sit in a quiet space and just listen. She has many stories to tell.
